Introduction
Colon hydrotherapy (also known as colon irrigation or colonic cleansing) is a naturopathic procedure in which warm, filtered water is gently infused into the large intestine to remove accumulated waste, gas, and mucus. It aims to improve bowel function, support detoxification, and promote digestive health. The therapy is performed using a controlled, hygienic machine under the supervision of a trained therapist.
Procedure
- Preparation
- Patient lies in a comfortable position, usually left lateral or supine.
- A sterile, disposable speculum/nozzle is inserted into the rectum.
- The machine is set to appropriate water temperature and pressure.
- Infusion Phase
- Warm water is slowly infused into the colon.
- Controlled pressure ensures safety and prevents overdistension.
- Evacuation Phase
- Water along with loosened stool and gas exits through a closed tubing system.
- The process alternates between filling and emptying cycles.
- Duration
- The session usually lasts 30–45 minutes.
- Completion
- Nozzle removed; patient may use the toilet for final elimination.
- Hydration and light meals are recommended afterward.
